Way back in 2006, Natalie Zee Drieu wrote about the Crochet Hyperbolic Coral Reef. The project has continued, it now tours, and it has spawned nearly two dozen “satellite reefs.” The second image above is of the New York Reef. There’s even a how-to book. The reef is a project of The Institute for Figuring. On their About page, they state:
If mathematics is a language of pattern, its structures may be seen as the verses of a formal, yet fantastical poetics. Across the globe people have delighted in the harmonies of this language and the patterns discovered therein. These are the songs that figures sing amongst themselves.
Indeed. [Thanks, Laurie!]
