At the Google I/O BootCamp event in San Francisco, Brian Jepson gathered a sizable crowd as he showed off his Arduino NDEF Reader/RFID Twitter-Looker-Upper project to curious Android developers eager to gain some hands-on experience with the Near Field Communications technology available in the Nexus S Android smartphone. Attendees with the appropriate hardware were encouraged to download the free NXP TagWriter app and use it to write a Twitter URL to a blank RFID tag. They could then verify their status update frequency with a tap of their tag on Brian’s prototype. The device would then talk to a Processing app running on a laptop to display the username and a Twitter API query would then light up the appropriate LED. For folks interested in building their own, code for the project is available on GitHub.
