Michael Dory, Adam Simon, and Scott Varland of Socialbomb presented a tutorial on Arduino hacking at last month’s O’Reilly Open Source Convention:

Arduino is an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software. It’s intended for artists, designers, hobbyists, and anyone interested in creating interactive objects or environments.

In this tutorial, participants will learn how to create devices for sensing and communicating with the physical world using the Arduino platform. This session will feature an introduction to physical computing and interfacing with microcontrollers, as well as the basics of Arduino (hardware and software) and using it with the Processing programming environment.

Participants built an Etch-a-Sketch clone and went home with a copy of Making Things Talk, an Arduino, and a bunch of related components. project build Flickr set | Arduino OSCON photos on Flickr

Making Things Talk – Programming microcontrollers used to require an expensive development environment costing thousands of dollars and requiring professional electrical engineering expertise. Open-source physical computing platforms with simple i/o boards and development environments have led to new options for hobbyists, hackers, and makers. This book contains a series of projects that teach you what you need to know to get your creations talking to each other, connecting to the web, and forming networks of smart devices.

I'm a tinkerer and finally reached the point where I fix more things than I break. When I'm not tinkering, I'm probably editing a book for Maker Media.
