Tablet mods are really starting to take off. Jez over at sammynotebook.com is in the midst of cramming a Samsung N110 into a custom bamboo and aluminum case with promising effect. Add a decent screen with capacitive touch and you’d have a decent machine. It’s also nice to see the use of sustainable materials showing up in a build like this. Not only are you foregoing the hunk of plastic normally used, but you get the added benefit of having a finished product that feels natural to the touch. [via liliputing]
I was able to pick up a 1″ thick bamboo cutting board for $12 locally. With extensive help from my good friend Tim, who happens to also be a very talented Industrial Designer, we cut the bamboo to size and milled out the cavities for the battery cells and the main cavity for the mainboard. Then we used an approximately 0.075″ thick sheet of aluminum for a front and sides cover and cut the opening for the screen and bent the two sides.
