Here’s a round up of computer controlled Etch-a-sketches. A MAKE reader wrote in asking if there was a collection, so now there is –

  • Electr-O-Sketch – Link.
  • Computerized Etch A Sketch – Link.

I don’t understand why Neil (the computerized etch a sketch) was required by The Ohio Art Company to include those legal statements… seems rather silly. It’s not as though he was claiming he invented the Etch A Sketch.

I’d take them down if it were me.

    Cool projects, though.

Wow. Everything old is new again. I did one of these back in college …. 1979. Same technology: two stepping motors coupled to the shafts. I had a stepping motor controller, which took care of sequencing the coils in response to a pair of TTL inputs: step left and step right. Controlled two motors, too. Hooked it up to an IMSAI S-100 computer (8080 8-bit processor).

Ohio art has a long history of being VERY VERY diligent about protecting their brand.
