HOW TO – Connect a TI-83 to the internet & control a laser…

Pointer-Big
Here are a couple fun TI-83 projects sent in from our MAKE readers over the weekend – “Telnet 83 v0.96 Beta for the TI-83. This program will allow you to connect to the Internet from your TI-83 and allow you to do IRC, e-mail, or browse the World Wide Web. You need a TI-Graph Link cable, an external 9600 modem, and a cellular phone or wall jack. Telnet 83 goes a step futher than FTerm, RTerm, and ZTerm by featuring an 80×25 scrolling “virtual” screen. This allows you to run programs for Linux such as Pine.” [via] Link. Next up, control a laser beam with a TI-83 “With the addition of gears or pulleys, it’s a great way to teach about ratios and simple machines. With a flash light or laser module (not included), students see the reality of sine, cosine and other trig functions. You can even attach a servo motor and a small video camera to teach about the 3-D geometry of astronomy. The pointer is precise to within 1 degree, has a max speed of over 45 degrees/second (7.5 rpm), and is strong enough to provide 100 oz-in of torque.” Link.
