It’s Robotics Month on MAKE

In concert with the forthcoming robot issue of MAKE, Volume 27, we’ll be covering robots here on the site this month. As you can imagine, over the years, we’ve amassed quite a lot of robot-related material, here on the website, in the magazine, and in Make: Projects. We’ll be repackaging some of the best of that material over the month and organizing some of it into our Skill Builder series. We’ll also be revisiting our popular CoasterBot project that we did with Jameco last year and organizing that content into a series of tutorials on Make: Projects. And we’ll have a special Make: Live episode dedicated to robots on Wednesday, July 13th.

And if all that wasn’t enough, we’re also going to have the godfather of hobby robotics, Gordon McComb, in the house! Gordon has just released the fourth edition of his groundbreaking Robot Builder’s Bonanza, the book that pretty much started the hobby robot scene when it was first released in 1987 (it’s the book that got me into robotics). The new edition is amazing, with over 730 pages, 100 projects, really great basic electronics and other robot building skills tutorials, and other indispensable goodies. I think it’s the best beginning robotics book out there (and I wrote a beginning robotics book!). We’ll be excerpting from Gordon’s book, giving copies away, and seeing what trouble Gordon is getting himself into these days.

As always, we’d love to hear from you. What would you like to see covered this month, especially in basic skill building, and especially ideas/concepts that might fall through the cracks. We’ll be covering microcontrollers, motor controllers, servos, basic drive trains, basic sensing, and power. What else would you like to know about?

What will the next generation of Make: look like? We’re inviting you to shape the future by investing in Make:. By becoming an investor, you help decide what’s next. The future of Make: is in your hands. Learn More.
