Projects for cyber-crafters

Nice MAKE mention in the article! Never mind building a bird feeder, or planting a carpet garden in the backyard, or hammering a nail in a wall to hang up that new poster of Carrie Underwood; the new do-it-yourself ethos is a techno thing. For example, instead of unearthing the Black & Decker Workmate and adding a storage shelf to the garage, consider creating a new fingerprint identity. It’s not that difficult, once you locate someone else’s latent fingerprint, which is made up essentially of fat and sweat. These are things you learn studying the New DIY. Link.

Titan Arum Blooming 2005 Live Video Broadcast

Mo Mug The Titan Arum is a plant that looks like it’s from The Little Shop of Horrors is going to bloom again, and you can watch it live over the web! The growers of a rare flower, the giant but malodorous titan arum or “corpse flower,” say a large plant that blossomed four years ago is about to blossom again, and may be on a record-setting pace for cultivated titan arums. You have to admire a plant called the Titan IV, Big Bucky and the corpse flower. [via] Link.

Art Mobs! DIY audio guides!

Art Mobs! DIY audio guides!

Ipod
Art mobs are unofficial audio tours of MoMA. Before you head off to the museum you download the audio files and listen to commentary that you can’t get with the audio guides that MoMa offers, the audio also offers some music. I personally think this is going to be they way that a lot of people tour museums in the next few years (audio meta data, tagging…etc). Another interesting thing would be to add photos as well as recording your own and publishing those back. Rocketboom has the video of all this! Link.

The CVS disposable video camera isn’t out in all areas but there are some folks who have started to take it apart, document it and more. It looks like it’s using a Samsung 256mb flash chip, there’s a bit about the connectors, so it’s really just a matter of weeks now until you can pick one of these up, build a cable then have a really cheap digital video camera. Here’s a forum with a lot of information starting to get posted up (and we’ll have it here too as this progresses). Link.
