Artist Upcycles Dolls By Giving Them “Makeunders”

 Update: She has released a tutorial video. According to the video, all you really need to give your old doll a fresh face is nail polish remover (containing acetone), eucalyptus oil, and cotton balls. Although, it ought to be noted that you should also have gloves to wear when using a chemical solvent like acetone to avoid irritating your skin.

After collecting discarded dolls found in charity shops in her native Tasmania, artist Sonia Singh gives them “makeunders” by repainting their faces, making them new shoes, and dressing them in new clothes that were hand knitted and sewn by her mother.

My sisters and I grew up playing with second-hand dolls and home-made toys in the beautiful Tasmanian natural environment. I love the satisfaction of repairing and reusing discarded items to give them a new lease on life.

She calls her refashioned creations “Tree Change Dolls” and she plans to sell them in an Etsy shop very soon, but in the meantime you can follow her progress on this fascinating project on her tumblr blog.
