A partnership between Google and Lego has ushered in a new age of virtual block-play: Build with Chrome. The venture was announced on the Google Chrome Blog on Jan. 28, where they explained, “There’s something pretty amazing about being able to piece together your ideas with just a collection of colorful bricks… We think the creative freedom of LEGO bricks shouldn’t be limited…”

The virtual environment has been developed over several years in Australia using WebGL and Google Maps to create the 3D building experience. With over 8 trillion bricks available in many shapes and colors, the creative field is certainly wide open to hobbyists and Makers looking for a LEGO fix anytime, anywhere. It works with both the traditional Chrome browser as well as the mobile one, so you can build on your Android device as well as your laptop.

And because Build with Chrome interfaces with Google+, it’s easy to share your creations with a global community. Already, over 1 million builders have published over 66,000 builds — everything from M.C. Escher inspired constructions to the Loch Ness Monster. Those just starting out can use The Build Academy to learn the ropes by taking lessons to master techniques and challenges.

True, the unveiling is timed just right for the release of The LEGO Movie in February, but that doesn’t make it any less fun.
