Angelica cooking with a little help from Naoki.

Dr. Angelica Lim is a computer scientist and researcher specializing in artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and emotion. She studied AI at Simon Fraser University, then went on to earn her Masters and Ph.D. in Infomatics from Kyoto University.

Angelica has worked on underwater robots, music playing robots, and has developed behaviors for the popular Aldebaran NAO and recently announced Pepper robots. She also works as a journalist for the prestigious IEEE Spectrum Automaton Robotics Online Magazine.

In a 2012 presentation for TEDx Kyoto (above), Angelica explained the missing component for robots in the home is trust. She sees plenty of functional robots, and plenty of fun (dancing, singing, entertaining) robots, but very few robots at the intersection of functional and social.

Angelica’s passion is to improve the reputation of robots and make them more approachable and friendly, more humanlike. Her thesis work and scientific journal publications address how robots interact with humans through musical performance, body language, speech patterns, and more.

This August, Angelica will be heading to the Aldebaran AI Lab. She’ll be presenting at TEDx Kuala Lumpur in August, too. Angelica is very excited to be able to encourage the next generation of robotic creators, especially artists and creatives of all ages.
