Valentine’s Day is upon us. For many people this means exchanging cards, chocolates, and eating fancy meals, or maybe even ignoring the holiday altogether. A select few of you, however, may be using this romantic holiday as an opportunity to propose. And while we’re taking opportunities, maybe you’ll even take the time to create a handmade ring box to spice up the moment when you pop the question. So here are nine cool ring boxes to inspire and to make.
(For the rest of us, we just have one more day until half price V-day candy.)
Crocheted Ring Box
Aw yeah, yarncraft! Bet you thought this would just be a list of clever wooden boxes, didn’t you? Didn’t you!? Well you were wrong. Hook together this keepsake ring box to symbolize how tightly your love has hooked your heart.
Chechen and Purple Heart
A lot of work and love must go into a good relationship. The same can be said for a woodworking project done well. In this video Paul Jackman shows the process of turning chechen and purple heart wood into a lovely little engagement ring box.
Brass and Wood Iris Aperture
Why are iris apertures so undeniably cool? This iris aperture opens with a twist, revealing the ring instantly. It’s a dramatic reveal perfect for a photographer (like the recipient of this particular ring box), or the person who has become too jaded with hinged and lidded boxes and now needs something so much more in their life.
3D Printed Boxes
If your machining and woodworking skills aren’t quite up to par for a project like the one above, but you do have a 3D printer, you can find several iris ring box options ready to 3D print on Thingiverse. Of the many available options, I’m partial to the FlowerBox. Okay, so it does not have an iris aperture, but it looks like a spaceship design fit for a Twilight Zone episode, which definitely makes my heart flutter.
Ring Box with Malachite Detailing
Crazy about your partner? Is your connection so deep it’s at the bottom of the ocean? Well, nothing quite says that like Malachite. This box predates my Steven Universe reference, so that’s probably not what it’s meant to say at all. It’s probably meant to say something more obvious like: “I love you!” or “Will you marry me?”
A Tennis Ball
Does your SO like long walks? Maybe with your dog who you are definitely not proposing to — no matter how it looks in the photos! This tennis ball ring box is the ideal proposal presentation if your Best Man is actually Man’s best friend.
Don’t Eat the Ring
This project calls itself a coin purse, but the photograph that accompanies the tutorial clearly shows just how perfectly sized it is for a ring. So instead of stuffing a ring inside a real macaron, try one of these hand sewn ones instead. They’re almost as sweet as the real thing.

The gorgeous wood used for this box is called bocote. The design is simple, but when you’re using materials with patterning this intricate there’s really no need to overcomplicate things.
Unnecessarily Complicated Ring Box
If you looked at the rest of the boxes on this list while tutting through your teeth “Too simple…” then maybe you’ll be impressed by this box with key, iris, and additional jewelry storage. Still too simple for your enigma-loving paramour? Show us what you come up with in the comments.
