Inspired by Maker Faire this past weekend? Workshop Weekend, happening in locations around the Bay Area this coming Saturday and Sunday, will turn that enthusiasm into hands-on education and real-life making. An amazing range of short (2-4 hour) introductory workshops will take you from knowing nothing to welding, making pens, casting glass or metal, building and programming an Arduino, sewing soft circuits, distilling spirits, making cheese, fire-eating, and many other rewarding skills. Go for it!

if the picture is an indication, at least one person will learn that you can get a nasty sunburn from welding without proper protective gear.

I really hate to be the bitter pill about this because Maker Faire is awesome and this sort of “Workshop Weekend” is a great initiative and sounds like great fun, but screw you, Bay Area, for being 3000 miles away. It seems like no matter how hard I look for it the DIY movement has steadfastly avoided Florida and the Southeast in general. I love hearing about all the events on the Makezine blog, but I am constantly dismayed and depressed that nothing is happening in my area. Like, ever. I keep toying with the idea of starting a hackerspace here and conjuring up my own DIY movement, but there just seems to be no interest here in that sort of thing.
