Tool Tales: The Case of the Rattling Awl

Tool Tales: The Case of the Rattling Awl

The first car I remember my parents owning was a 1977 Chevrolet station wagonโ€”blue, with fake wood paneling on the sides. A few months after buying the car, Dad reports, something within the passenger-side rear compartment wall, near the spare tire stowage, began to rattle. Soon, the noise irritated him enough that he disassembled the interior paneling to find and silence it.

Landfill Harmonic: Making Beautiful Music From Trash

Landfill Harmonic: Making Beautiful Music From Trash

Every so often I come across a project or a maker that stops me in my tracks and fills me wonder and a reaffirmation of the power of making. Landfill Harmonic is one such project. The soon-to-be released documentary tells the story of the people ofย Cateura, Paraguay, a barrio built on a landfill where residents pick through trash to eke out a living recycling and selling trash. But a local youth orchestra also make beautiful music from instruments made from garbage. If the trailer is any indication, the film looks fantastic.
