Here it is, just ummm…. 6ish months late for those of you who saw its debut at ‘The Last HOPE’. For everyone else: 1LT/C is a machine that is capable of running L.A.S.E.R. Tag for a cost of about $200, providing you get creative and make your own case out of oh… say cardboard? The end result is still well below $300 after you toss in a cheap keyboard+mouse and house everything in a Pelican case as pictured above.

Here is a basic bare bones spec breakdown. With these components you can run in single screen mode at 18FPS.

What am I missing here? Are we talking about a laser tag game? Where are the ‘guns’? Is this the central controller? Or is this something else? The link-through only shows a collection of components, with no clue as to what they are used for.

  2. Robot Hacker says:

Going to the main page of their website they have another blog entry about “147 feet out from a wall at a local mall we were able to cover nearly 1/3 of the Dillard’s building side to side; the entire wall top to bottom.”

  3. Wilson! says:

It’s a “Laser Graffiti” system – check out the GRL home page for the Graffiti Research Lab for examples.

  4. Jestersage says:

What they mean is the Laser Tag that does computer-based light graffiti. In that light, this is quite a nice design, considering how much off the shell components one can use.

  5. Slapshot says:

L.A.S.E.R. tag is a system to write on buildings with a projector and a laser pointer, created by GRL: http://graffitiresearchlab.com/?page_id=76

All in all, it’s buggy but kind of fun for about 10 minutes if you have a projector, a webcam, and a laser pointer lying around, but not worth buying special equipment for. I saw the OLTPC thing at Hope and it really isn’t anything you couldn’t do with a laptop… which you probably already have.

  6. Chris says:

What’s the point of this? Can’t you just use some old notebook?

  7. screaminscott says:

OK, thanks for the clarification guys

  8. GRL-Utah says:

You are correct! You absolutely can do this with an old laptop, or new netbook. Something that is essentially the same platform but did not exist when this project was conceived.

As for the point. I needed some hardware to do a 5 projector setup in order to run L.A.S.E.R. Tag on the 5 tallest buildings in Salt Lake City simultaneously. I had 5 laptops but they were to antiquated to run L.A.S.E.R. Tag. Instead of buying five $500 laptops I opted to make my own setup for $200.
