It starts out clear and end up red! Blood Scarf depicts a scarf knit out of clear vinyl tubing. An intravenous device emerging out of the user’s hand fills the scarf with blood. The implied narrative is a paradoxical one in which the device keeps the user warm with their blood while at the same time draining their blood drip by drip. [via] – Link

Hey Kids! Can’t decide if you want to suicide by exsanguination or by asphyxia? Well now you can
have it both ways! Just make sure you wrap your scarf *tight*.
Seriously though, of all the weird and sometimes wonderful projects featured on Make: (many of which should reasonably tagged with “do_NOT_try_this_at_home”), this is possibly the most bizarre thing I have seen.
Utter genius or sheer madness? You decide – I can’t!
Pretty silly. Even if you didn’t die from blood loss (i.e. injected extra to fill the void) there’s no way it’ll keep you warm – what do you think is a better thermal insulator; your skin, or clear vinyl tubing?
If anything, it should be marked as a blood chiller.
Good point p2media… instead of using your own blood make up a batch of your own fake blood to put in the scarf!

This is disgusting.
Hey kids! This is disgusting. Why is this even here?
ART!
creepy..
Oh my god, this is fucking hilarious.
CREEPY!!
i thought van Gough was weird when he cut off his own ear! sheesh, if he could see this!
Egads.
When I read this, I didn’t even blink, and kept reading.
Until I saw the Lego NXT thing, and realized I was on MAKE:, not on We Make Money Not Art in my RSS reader.
Make: is fun and all, but this is far more WMMNA’s range, not Make:’s
it doesn’t look very comfortable, does it.
ok, point taken…
Interesting (like a train wreck), but decidedly disturbing – it Make:s MY skin crawl…
Wait… is the clear tubing kept at a vacuum? If not, where does the air escape to if you stick the needle in your arm/hand and supposedly the blood streams into the scarf? Also, if it’s not at vacuum, doesn’t that mean you have to keep your hand above your head to let your blood stream into the scarf?
This looks like a hoax to me. I like the concept (though I wouldn’t want to wear one, thanks), but it would never work in the way it is pictured here.
Fub, it’s not a hoax, it’s “modern art”.
Well, it’s certainly something. Sadly, something that suspected terrorists (i.e. anyone someone points the finger at, whether reasonable or not) or an enemy of the state whatever that means these days) would get to wear before being dumped in a forest as a suicide.
(See http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=david+kelly+death for where I am coming from)
technically it is post-modern, or contemporary art.
This could be the most ill-advised entry since the “How to weld razor blades into throwing stars” post a few months back.
Dunno what you were aiming for with this one, guys, but damn! It’s creepy enough reading about putting stuff into your body (i.e. RFID tags), but draining your blood into some freaky scarf is taking “weird” to a whole other level.
Haha, that’s a little disturbing.
Ok folks, this is conceptual art, not a howto. I’m making mental note to keep things more practical! Thanks!
MAKE: me nauseous.
Haha, sorry, couldn’t resist that one!
gang, it’s an art project posted on a *blog* it will be off the site in a day and in the archives – it’s not a big deal.
if i posted it 30 days ago with a fake blood recipe no one would have even noticed.
Doesn’t knitting belong on Craft:Blog ?
I believe its a fake. The blood would have to come out at some pressure to fill the many yards of undulating tube, going up and down countless times, and so quickly, that the blood at the air pushing end does not have time to coagulate, where it comes into contact with the air. It is probably red tubing. The dangling end in the original photo on her site, is red to the very end. If it was filled with blood, and the end was subsequently sealed to prevent the blood from leaking, then the end would probably be clear.

wait I assumed the hidden hand would have an ‘iv’ too thats only way it would stay warm is if it circulated. of course not sure its really high quality blood after circling round my neck a coupla dozen times
I like it. Makes people think, even if some can’t get past the idea.
How could you NOT think this is fake?
