If you’re a Jack (or Jill!) of all trades who is looking to inject a little playfulness into your sewing projects, then The Art of Whimsical Stitching by Joanne Sharpe is a good place to start. This book features overviews of various materials, techniques, and projects. Anyone who is interested in getting started with fiber arts would find it helpful, but especially those crafters who are either, already artistically inclined and want to learn more about sewing, or already sewing savvy and would like to try their hand at more creative endeavors.

In her introduction, Sharpe explains how this book came from her personal experience of learning to work creatively with fiber, “This is the book I wished I had when I was researching how to transfer my mixed-media art skills into sewing, quilting, hand embroidery, and machine stitching.” Based on her research, she suggests various fibrous manifestations for your creative development. Projects like the “Fancy Quilted Pouch” (shown above) or the “Wonderfully Wooly Book” (shown below) are not only opportunities to hone your expressive skills, they’re also useful objects that would make great gifts!

Wonderfully Woolly book

The projects in this book are really just a means to and end, because the ultimate goal of the book is to whet your appetite for fibrous fun. Sharpe really sums up her intentions when she says, “My approach to whimsical art sewing is by no means meant to be a guide to making a someone a master quilter or painter, but instead meant to inspire a curious creative blend of art and skill.” So, if you’ve been itching for some creative stitching, go ahead and give “The Art of Whimsical Stitching” a look-see!
