Built By Wendy Dresses by Wendy Mullin with Eviana Hartman
Nothing says spring or summer more than dresses and this season you’ll be ready to make your own with Wendy Mullin’s new book, Built By Wendy Dresses: The Sew U Guide to Making a Girl’s Best Frock. This book is your 101 guide to making your own dresses. Mullin, along with Eviana Hartman bring you three basic patterns, the Sheath, Shift, and Dimdi through which you can piece together and sew up to 25 different dress combinations. From a sundress to a shift dress, you’ll find that sewing up the perfect dress is easy! Not to mention, the step-by-step instructions with accompanying line drawings are easy to follow too. The front section of the book gives you quick sewing lessons as it relates to the projects — helpful stuff like how to sew a variety of pockets, zippers, and instructions on how to line a dress. These little sewing nuggets are great to jump start your inspiration on how you can alter the designs and make it all your own.

  44. viquena says:

Between you, me, and the rest of the Craft readers, I own Impossible Can. Impossible Can looks kind of funny in pants. Impossible Can is roughly 2 sizes (on a good day) larger than the rest of Handleable Me. Problem-Solving Husband and Handleable Me decided the best way to get around this problem (and to keep me occupied with awesome sewing projects!) was to start making scads of dresses.
    I could use some help!
Oh, and I just started a sewing circle in my area. I think the other ladies would kill to look at this book. :)

  45. Sara L. says:

Oh, I keep seeing this book popping up in the craft blog world, and it looks great! I would love to start sewing for myself, branch out of the kid’s clothes rut I’m in, so this would be a great start. Me please!

This book would be wonderful to help me get started!

  48. Leigh says:

  49. rlynnbaker says:

ive really gotten into sewing again. this would be a great addition.

  50. Amber Spencer says:

I’m a newbie to sewing using a cheap sewing machine to learn. I’ve had to look up everything I’m learning through books or online tutorials. This book would be a great help to me! I would love to be able to sew my own clothing. I’ve managed to sew my toddler son a few things, but I’ve yet to venture into making my own clothing.

  51. rlynnbaker says:

ive really gotten into sewing again. this would be a great addition.

  52. says:

I have a stash of fabric and no job, so I need some new clothes. Commercial patterns take me hours to modify (I’m 5’10”) so a book that shows how to modify its basic patterns would be excellent for me.

  53. Pela says:

I have always loved dresses because of their sheer girliness. My main reason for wanting this book is so that I can make some new dresses I feel really good in. I’m still getting used to my post-baby body and feel like making something that flatters and hopefully makes me feel more comfortable with my new shape.
I am a mother of a very active 14 month old, but when I put a great fitting dress on I feel put together even if I have the remnants of my child’s last meal in my hair.
I love sewing, but haven’t had as much time of late. Thankfully, my little one has started to entertain himself for longer stretches of time leaving me a new opportunity…to sew! What better motivator than a wonderful new book all about delicious dresses!

  54. says:

…or probably any other girl for that matter. i originally learned to sew to make up for this fact and am ready to make something from scratch!

  55. Sara Berry says:

…her books are so informative and filled with easy to follow instructions. I have this book on my wishlist and would LOVE to be one of the lucky ones to win a copy here. 56. Emma says:

  62. Vivian says:

Being able to own shift dresses and fun frocks with Peter Pan collars in any print/fabric I want would be wonderful. This book could make it happen!

  63. avionflew says:

…. because the hardest part of my day was not so much the hangover; it was that I eventually had to put on PANTS.
    (clearly I need more dresses).

  64. Mug-z says:

I always have more trouble with dresses than I expect to. This would be great!

  65. Jessica says:

I love Built by Wendy style and I love versatility.

  66. Margie10 says:

These are fantastic! I have just started to sew. I can’t work anymore due to serious illness. I have seven sons and one daughter. And now two grandchildren. And we finally got a little girl-a granddaughter! My youngest sons are the same age as my grandchildren, too. So, I am learning how to sew and it’s HARD to learn at 42, haha!
I would love to have this. I want my daughter (21), my younger sons and my grandchildren to learn young. I have become more relaxed and happy from sewing that any other craft I do (a LOT!).
    Thank you.

  73. GYABO! says:

I would absolutely love this book as I have always been a huge Built by Wendy fan. But also because I’ve been determined to learn a new craft each year (at least), and sewing is one that I’ve been planning for a while. Got a machine, got a few yards of fabric, now I just need the most inspirational pattern!

  74. makerbaker says:

I would love to win this book! I love making dresses, but have a hard time finding good patterns. Built by Wendy patterns are awesome and some of my favorites right now.

  75. says:

i’d love a copy of this book because i’ve discovered it’s incredibly challenging picking up “off the rack” patterns when you are 5′ 1″ and on the big is beautiful side of things. being able to build my own custom patterns for my size would be a dream!

  76. says:

One of my goals this year to sew myself a new wardrobe so this would be a help to get me started!

  83. Corin Balkovek says:

Oh man…I have spent the better part of a year thousands of miles away from my sewing machine in California and the last three months suffering in icy, snowy, below-freezing winter weather. I’ll be reunited with my sewing machine soon, so not only would this book help ease my itchy pedal foot, but would give me the chance to make up a whole new wardrobe that doesn’t require me to wear a layer of wool!

  84. Elly says:

I’d love to win this book because I have a shelf of stash fabric (much of it given to me or cheap from thrift stores) that is just waiting to be made into some beautiful dresses!

I have the Built by Wendy Stretch U book that has helped me a ton in sewing knits, but dresses are my favorite thing to both wear and sew…the Built by Wendy Dresses book would be an awesome addition to my shelves!!

  89. panda13 says:

So I actually am very new to sewing and i think this would make the whole construction aspect very easy. I just got a sewing machine for christmas and am currently setting up my work station. 91. says:

I love Built by wendy, I use her simplicity patterns all the time! I would love this book, i love sewing clothes especially dresses and her book would be a good challange since the patterns aren’t typical in that you have to add your own seam allowance. plus i just love her style and design!!!

Ok, here is why I should win this giveaway. I love love love Wendy. I have her first book, and when I can afford a serger machine, I will buy her second. Thank you for your consideration!

  134. Amy says:

One of my first sewing projects was made from a Built by Wendy pattern. I love the way that the shirt turned out. I made a point to buy all the patterns at JoAnns when they were on sale…this book would be quite the little sewing blessing!

I am fairly new to sewing, but recently came across a flickr group of sewing projects made by different people using only Built By Wendy patterns. I was so inspired by how stylish and simple they were… exactly my style. So they have been added to my list of things to purchase. When I saw this post, I knew I had to enter. I would LOVE this book to help me really get into it and start sewing for myself instead of just for my toddler.

  184. Becky says:

I’m pretty experienced with sewing, but I often find myself having to alter store-bought patterns to get the look I want. From what I’ve seen on other reviews, there’s a lot of great how-tos on here for drafting and altering your own patterns, and pattern-making is something I’ve been wanting to learn for years!

  185. Noel (aka. kindermom) says:

I love to sew but still get easily befuddled by patterns. Wendy’s book breaks down the art of sewing dresses (my favorite), into easy to understand components. The book looks like it could really influence my sewing time in a positive way.

  186. knightlee says:

I’ve been looking for a book like this ever since I started sewing. I am woefully under average height (20 years old and 4’8), so even working with normal petite patterns requires some finagling. Any books that contribute to my understanding of basic patterns is a help to me. This looks pretty simple and direct, which is great.

  187. AWhimsy says:

I’ve been sooo eager to start sewing my own dresses and this would be peeeerfect!!

  194. jdoan says:

I taught myself how to sew, so I’d love to learn the correct way to sew more sophisticated projects like dresses! I’ve never attempted to sew a dress or shirt before because I’m intimidated by sewing darts and zippers. Winning this book would be perfect timing for sewing spring and summer dresses for myself and some lucky friends! Please pick me!

  195. lovequiltn says:

I’ve been a quilter for many years but haven’t sewn a garment since I was pregnant with my now-19-year-old son! That dress I made was a barely suitable maternity tent and I’d love to sew some really beautiful dresses now. There are such spectacular fabrics out there, and this book sounds like it would really be thorough and totally useful.
Thanks for the opportunity to play along!!

  200. amy says:

I’ve learned so much reading and doing the projects in the Built by Wendy Home Stretch book. I’d love to own this one because I already know I like the format. These books are very easy to understand and I like that they start off with the easier projects and work up towards more complicated ones (it gives me something to aim for). And they are great to keep around for reference. Also, it’s funny because I’ve been perusing the bookstores for a good dress making book for a couple of weeks. It’s like it’s meant to be!

  201. oceanofstitches says:

Being tall and curvy, I have had to make or alter every dress pattern I have ever used. Since the age of 12. I would definitely use the techniques and patterns in this book to make myself something I’d actually wear. Thank you for the giveaway!

  204. Anonymous says:

I’m fifteen, almost sixteen, and my goal for the next two years is to phase out all the clothes in my closet that are mass-produced and replace them with things that I’ve either made myself, or bought cheap and altered. I especially want to learn how to design my own simple patterns, and this book seems like a great way to start.

  205. Daniel T says:

I’d love this book, my girlfriend and I love making things for each other, but we’ve never made clothes for each other… maybe a dress for her (not me clearly…) would be a good start?!

with a hint of spring in the air today my mind is starting to think about summer, and this would be great to start making some summer dresses!

  212. Ashleigh Elson says:

I would love this book. I have her other two books and have done lots of projects from them (turns out I can make pants – that fit and look cute!). And I love dresses – so this seems like the ideal combination of a great teaching style, great patterns, and clothes I want to wear!

  216. Sarah Cintron says:

My little sister and I have next to nothing in common besides our love of knitting. Learning to sew dresses together would give us another great way to interact without bickering.

  217. yulka says:

i have had for years, and learned to sew on, my grandmother’s singer which, while beautiful, last year decided to only sew in reverse. it would be so nice to test-run the new machine i just got in the mail by making one of these gorgeous dresses!

  218. Elizabeth says:

I just inherited a boxful of vintage sewing patterns…mostly dresses, of course, from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. I really think Wendy’s book would help me take these awesome patterns and make them my own. Plus, I have such a hard time with off-the-rack dresses. They never fit right!

  219. AnnMarie Thomas says:

The last thing that I made for myself was a shirt that I finished right before having my daughter, and thus will probably never fit me again. As much as I love sewing diapers for stuffed animals (don’t ask), and hats for the same stuffed animals, winning this book would be an awesome excuse to make something fun for myself (and, heck, maybe also scale it down and make a toddler version for kiddo)!

  220. says:

So in Vermont it’s cold and dark for 6 months…Spring won’t come until May for us but I’d like to be ready with some cute dresses! I get overwhelmed easily by patterns so I’d love some inspiration from this book.
    Thanks for the opportunity!

  221. mcmartiank says:

I would love this book because I enjoy wearing dresses, but I have the hardest time finding styles and patterns I like from dresses on the rack. I have always enjoyed being ‘crafty’ and I think making my own dresses would be an excellent addition to my crafting repertoire.

  222. phyre says:

I fell in love with Wendy’s style of teaching after buying tons of sewing books and none worked for me. I had her 1st 2 books and then lost them in a fire. When my mojo came back to sew I realized that the only books I needed were Wendy’s. I purchased them again and I am happy that I did. I would love the 3rd to complete my collection.

  223. janackeh says:

i would love this book because im finally tackling sewing! and i love dresses!!!

  224. says:

I absolutely love the layout and options available in Wendy’s book.
This would be perfect for someone like me who would love to change things up in a pattern, but definitely needs direction. Her many options for different styles is sure to add to the individual comfort and fit that seems to be difficult with the uniformly designed dresses in the stores. I’d LOVE to have some stylish and fitting personal creations c/o Wendy’s designs!

  225. longlifelove says:

okay, here is why I NEED this great book. Built by Wendy could spare my boyfriend a life of humiliation.
Where I live, many of the local thrift shops eliminated their dressing rooms due to stealing/vandalism, so now I can no longer try on the great dresses I seek before purchasing them.
If I purchase one more thrift-store dress that doesn’t fit and gets crammed into the wardrobe my boyfriend and I share, I fear he may never be able to find his clothes and thus, be forced to live life in his underpants.
He would get awfully cold and people would stare. If I became a proud owner of this BBW book I could start making my own dresses that fit and never buy another tad too small dress again! Therefor, freeing up space in our wardrobe so my poor boyfriend can find his clothes.
So, help a gal…I mean GUY, out.

I live in Alaska and it’s very difficult to find any dresses in stores, let alone any that I like, let alone ones that will fit me! I can however find fabric that I like, so a book like this would help me get some new clothes that I both like the look of and that actually fits me! Hooray! Plus, I’d like to learn how to sew and size patterns better, and I’m sure this book could help me to do that too.

  241. says:

Since I never wear pants, this would do wonders for my DIY wardrobe. Built by Wendy books are so good, but I have been really limited in what I make from them (most just tops) since I have a femme lez commitment to dresses and skirts.

  242. JessA says:

    This book looks great!

  243. penessa says:

I’ve really been wanting to get my hands on this book.

  244. mommaviv says:

My daughter and I both have trouble finding dresses that fit well….this book would be a godsend.

  245. Unurgency says:

Wendy Mullins’ patterns make great use a few well-cut pieces of fabric to create clothes that are stylish and interesting without being too basic or so frustrating that your piece joins the “project pile.” I’ve enjoyed using her patterns and making variations on them ever since she first shared them. I think it’s fantastic that she shows so clearly how you can make your own wardrobe. So happy to see that she’s still putting out these books!

  246. wixlet says:

This book appeals to me because I have oddish proportions that require some creative pattern-adjusting on my part. I would love to get a crash course in adjusting patterns and get a more solid foundation in basic drafting, and it seems that this book would be perfect for both of those goals.
    Thanks for running the contest!

  247. Elli says:

I’m 5’0” with an extremely short torso. Finding dresses that actually fit me is a struggle, even when shopping in the petite section. This book would definitely help me out! It’d be amazing (and incredibly satisfying) if I could make my own dresses that fit well and give me confidence.

  248. says:

I would love to get this book. I’ve been reconstructing clothes for over a year now but have had trouble finding decent pattern or pattern books to help me move on to making my own clothes from scratch. I think this book would be a great help to fledgling crafter like myself.

  249. Susana says:

I am inordinately fond of dresses, but have a peculiar body type/size (way tiny, yet curvy, and long waisted, to boot) and am generally hard to please (as far as clothes, otherwise flowers, coffee, smiles, books, cats and most other things will work quite nicely). So I need this book, see?
PS: If this isn’t open internationally, please disregard. Thanks!

  250. elsiemarley says:

because even though it’s ass cold here now, summer is coming and I need me some dresses!

  251. 345603 says:

I lost my memory two years ago in a car crash, the first thing missing was my ability to sew. I started sewing at age 10 and now at over 45, I need to focus on making easy, beautiful pieces. This would be a great beginning, I have ideas, they just never materialize. Thanks for the opportunity to add to your long list.

  252. erican says:

This book looks so full of cool ideas and easy-to-follow directions. I would love to spend my summer learning to make dresses!

  258. lzy says:

Looks like a totally awesome book, I love the idea of mixing and matching the patterns, ingenious! I remember reading Craft’s earlier feature on Wendy, about selling from her front lawn and at the wax trax boutique in Chicago. It’s great that she has a book now. Thanks for the chance to win.

  259. April says:

I’d like to win this book because the only thing cooler than commenting while wearing a Built by Wendy dress would be commenting while wearing a Built by Wendy dress I made myself!

I will be entering my first year of college in the fall, and my budget would be limited. By having this book I would be able to make a variety of cute and simple dresses easily and at an affordable price. I would be very appreciative if I was chosen to receive this book. Have an excellent and blessed day.

I come from a long family history of making dresses that almost fit right. Almost. Would be lovely to learn to make it right (plus I also love that bateau neck!).

  263. Margaret says:

I love her Sew-U book AND just received my grandma’s sewing machine. Also, due to the highly unusually warm temperatures here in Seattle, I’ll be needing some new spring dresses sooner than ever! :)
PS-Thank you for fixing the commenting error!

This books looks very creative and just my style. I would love to add it to my collection! My mother taught me how to sew when I was a little girl and on my 10th birthday gave me my very first singer sewing machine. I have had it ever since—just a few minor repairs—and have been making garments and accessories for several years now. My friends and co-workers call me the jill-of-all-trades, because they think I can do it all (key word: think).
I would love to win this book!

  265. allara serasai says:

I don’t wear dresses very often, but this book would inspire me to do so :P

  268. Jo says:

I’ve been really intrigued by this book ever since it was recommended on And now seeing my favorite crafting site recommend it too? Now I really know it’s awesome. As an experienced quilter who still has lingering doubts about my ability to make clothes, this sounds right up my alley.

  269. keletubbie says:

I’d like to win this book because it’d be a great excuse for me to stop just sewing square tote bags – even I don’t need any more! – and finally dust off the dress form I pulled out of a skip on the side of the road and make something useful!

  270. CJVachowski says:

I have the basics, but I’m TERRIFIED of attempting to sew clothing!

this is such an awesome offer.some of the proudest moments in my crafting life have been when i’ve stepped out wearing clothes i’ve made or upcycled myself.even better when someone compliments what i’ve made.the only thing is when this happens i’m always thinking’don’t look too closely’ because my practical skills don’t match aspirations.i’ve drooled over this book because i think it would really make enough of a difference to my efforts for me to be 100% proud of them …even on close up inspection.thankyou so much for this offer**

I expect that England may be exempt from this lovely giveaway…but in for a penny…
Seeing as the English recession is still in full swing and i have 2 kids to clothe, i would LOVE this book to aid me in my thrifty adventures of making myself and my children wear clothes that i love and they actually don’t hate! (and husband likes due to less opening of wallet…)
I bet the book is every bit as brilliant as ‘Sew-U Home stretch’ which i have and is ridiculously over-used.
    Greetings from and English fan,

At six feet tall, I have a nearly impossible time finding clothes that fit! Especially dresses. And, I have no idea of how to alter patterns, so sewing clothes is hard for me too. I would so love to be able to figure this all out! And, it will help with my eventually going to be 6 foot tall daughter, too. I have the fabric and the sewing machine, just need to learn how make a pattern that actually fits. Please, my mother in law would be thrilled if I stopped wearing mens clothes! Thanks for the contest!

    Hi there,
This is a great find. Not too many books around like this I can tell you. Am in a beginner sewing circle learning how to make clothes for me and my little girl but there’s not too many books that explain things like this and looks nice and easy to follow.

  293. MinaCrafts says:

    I’d love some sewing inspiration!

  294. Morgan says:

I would love this book because while I can be considered a plus size on top I have small hips and average legs.
And when I go searching for standard patterns to fit my dimensions they all look like I am wearing a sack!
So I would like to learn to play with a pattern to find a cute, flattering fit for both my top and bottom!

  295. Sarah says:

I would love to have a chance to work out of this book – it looks like it would be wonderful for me, as a beginning sewer and an utter dress obsessive. I would love to start making my own dresses to add to my ever-growing collection!

  296. CallieMKat says:

I’m the inverse of “naked tall lady” at 5’1″. Everything is rolled, cuffed, chopped off, pinned …… My sewing skills are basic and I really would like to learn to change a pattern or garment to truly fit me!

  297. Courtney says:

I was just reading about this book over on Dress-A-Day! I’m not a very good seamstress yet, but I’m trying to learn and this would be so helpful!

  306. camelama says:

How have I not known about these before? I love it! Want this for making some “professional” clothing, as the store-bought stuff available in my size is all horrible cheap fabrics and cheap sewing and buttons that fall off the day after you buy it. Jobhunting means needing interview clothing, and two years of unemployment means no money for buying new clothes!

  314. norarachel says:

I recently gave birth to a baby boy. Aside from the ecstatic feeling I have of being a new mom, I also hate my wardrobe. I’m still 20 pounds overweight, and nothing in my old wardrobe fits. I have to buy new clothes.
What makes me so sad is because I love wearing dresses. Love, love, love dresses. But I haven’t been wearing them since I got big, and apparently now I still cannot find dresses that fit my new shape. They always get tight around the tummy and hip. That’s why lately I’ve been thinking about learning to sew my own dresses, and this book will be perfect!

  320. jchristinahuh says:

I always need to alter things to fit me!

This looks like a great book for someone like me: new to sewing garments, inexperienced with working with patterns, and hoping to learn how to make them more “me”.

  323. maryetta5 says:

    I need this book!

  324. jmai says:

I’ve always been attracted to Built by Wendy clothing, books and patterns and so feel that the book would be a great reference in my library. The clothes themselves have amazing simplicity while retaining unique style – which is also replicated in the layout the books and patterns. With Wendy at my side, I feel that I can conquer my clothesmaking fears – which need to be mastered as my new year’s resolution was to only make my own clothes! Just thinking about using the book makes me excited to have dresses that fit me well, as I’ve always found it difficult to find petite sized dresses. I also feel that I’ve shown amazing perseverance to login and comment despite the problems over the past few days! :D
Oh, I would actually love to find out what a ‘Dimdi’ is!!
