By using a pair of polarizing filters and a property of certain materials called birefringence we can photograph the hidden stresses in hard plastics. This instructable was inspired by this article and a comment I read in another instructable, somewhere, about LCD monitors and polarization.

The safety glass of automobile windows is also shows some very interesting patterns caused (I presume) by the methods and compounds used to bind the layers of material.
Somewhat more disturbing are the stress patterns in the windows of buildings.
This is great. So great i gave it a try and have to say that it was still great.

You can be more creative by using bits of scotch tape to make your own designs. My Flickr shots were done with the tape on slide mounts and photographed between two polarizing filters.
Have fun.
