Leah of Craftster.org pointed me to some cool looking chemistry symbol knit baby blocks. The blocks were created by Elspeth as a gift to her Chemistry professor and his expectant wife. A great way to practice intarsia knitting! Link.

A great way to practice intarsia knitting!
Actually, the letters on the blocks are done with duplicate stitch — where a contrasting yarn is stitched over existing stitches to give the appearance of intarsia. It’s a good technique for a project like this where added bulk isn’t a liability.
Intarsia wouldn’t really work for a project like this, as there’s no way to carry the yarn to the edge of the knitting.
