Readers should note: I saw this item on Engadget a couple of weeks ago and was really excitede about it, especially since it was being touted as a low cost device, prices starting at $110. Well there’s a caveat, those prices are only if you order in quantities of 1000 or more. For a single unit, the base price and all of the peripherals cost 2.5 times what they list for. The $400 fully decked out model then becomes a $1000 lackluster toy.
MAKE ought to do a group-buy, then! At $110, I’m sure you’d sell at *least* a thousand of ’em.
That’s $110 for the bare board. Options add up – cell phone module is $94, screen is $77, etc. Fully optioned, with cell, GPS, WiFi, screen, battery, etc., it’s $388 (in lots of 1000).
For that kind of money, I’ll wait for OpenMoko.
I’m getting a little inpatient waiting for OpenMoko. the ‘1’ button on my cell is beginning to fail so I’m worried I’ll have to own one more closed phone before it’s ready.
kryten007, I like your idea of a group buy. If I organized a buying co-op for this product, how many other people do you think you could get to buy this product?
We have started such a Group Buy.
Please do not be disappointed about the final price of 649 EUR – we can’t do magics.
