Golden Cicada Wing Earrings

Craft & Design

Growing up in Chicago, I remember the first time I heard the sound of cicadas, a loud, unmatched symphony. Despite the fact that cicadas are pretty large insects and can be kinda scary as they fly around, they have an undeniable beauty, especially in their delicate wings. Based in Lawrence, Kansas, Sudlow Jewelry has a line of cicada wings, including earrings (pictured above in brass), a gorgeous cuff bracelet, and a necklace. They’ve traced a real cicada wing to get all of the detail, and then laser-cut the design into brass or stainless steel (your choice).

I'm a word nerd who loves to geek out on how emerging technology affects the lexicon. I was an editor on the first 40 volumes of MAKE, and I love shining light on the incredible makers in our community. In particular, covering art is my passion — after all, art is the first thing most of us ever made. When not fawning over perfect word choices, I can be found on the nearest mountain, looking for untouched powder fields and ideal alpine lakes.
