Bill Wilson from steadywinds.com kites writes – “I was inspired by the post about the PVC Light Tent and needed something to take pictures of the cards and books my wife makes as part of her hobby. (plus it was cool). So a cardboard box, a knife and a little glue I had my very own light tent. All my friends and colleagues asked how I made it.. so I thought I would put together this Instructable.” – Link.

What engineers call elegant design, I think. Do users of lighting tents only think about lights applied through the translucent materials? Bill, it looks like you’ve used a fluorescent light and applied it directly. Good result, too. I think photographers recognize 2 basic kinds of lighting, point and diffused. Point light sources make sharper images. Most of use diffused cause it’s more available and perhaps we like the softer results. Clear light bulbs and the sun are considered point light sources. Be interesting to see that apple shot with a point and a diffused light source for comparison.

Thanks for the inspiration! I just made a light tent that’s a little larger than this one (it’s 4’x3′) with a roll of paper for the backdrop and bedsheets as diffusers. I think it cost, in total, about $30 for wood and paper. This will come in real handy for portfolio shots!
