CRAFT: Cozy Up to Yarn

Lion Brand Yarn

This project is how I taught myself to crochet. I wanted to showcase felt beads, but just stringing them wasn’t exciting enough. I wrapped a bead with yarn, and tied it around my neck, but there was something missing. So I used a crochet hook to try to stitch a chain. I swear, the hardest part was figuring out the slip knot!

This is super easy crochet at its finest. The resulting necklace is a great take on a traditional pendant hanging from a metal chain. Even if you’ve never crocheted one stitch before, you cannot fail in making this, and who knows, you might get hooked on the hook and have to join in the Fuzzy Panda Crochet-Along!

Materials:
Yarn
, I used Moonlight Mohair
Crochet Hook, I used size J
Large Eye Needle
Felt Bead

Note on the felt bead: As an obsessive felt maker, I generally always make my own beads. But with this project, making the bead takes as long as making the chain. I cut my time in half with premade beads from Woolala.

Step 1: Cut 4.5 feet of yarn. I love using the Lion Brand Moonlight Mohair because I can pull the yarn apart and get two completely different looks. Gently separate the strand of sparkle from the strand of mohair, and choose one to begin with. Save the other for when you want to make a second necklace.

Step 2: Using the large eye needle, thread the felt bead through its center. Push the bead down the yarn leaving 2 feet on one side of the bead, and 2.5 feet on the other.

Step 3: Keep the needle threaded, and pull the long end of the the yarn down the bead. Then push the needle back up through the center of the bead. Repeat this step, but wrap the thread on the opposite side of the bead. Continue until you have made 6 passes around the bead. Finish with the yarn coming out the top of the bead.

Step 4: Choose one strand of yarn to begin with. Tie a slip knot at the base of the bead and insert the crochet hook. Wrap the yarn once around the hook. Pull the wrapped yarn under the loop of the slip knot, pushing the slip knot loop off the end of the hook, leaving only one loop on the hook. That is one stitch in the chain. Continue making crocheted stitches until the chain is about 7 inches long. When you’ve made the last stitch, you can bind off by just removing the hook from the loop, bringing the tail back through the loop, and tying it off.

Step 5: Repeat with the other strand of yarn to form the necklace. Make the second chain as long as the first one.

Step 6: To wear the necklace, just tie the yarn in a bow! If you want to get fancy, you can easily attach a clasp to the ends of the necklace. P.S. Check out the matching earrings in my book, Feltique!
