It’s been busy here in the D lately with makers and crafters buzzing about Maker Faire Detroit. Luckily with everything going on I still found some time to make it over to Royal Oak’s 323 East Gallery to see Johnny Cupcakes on his Back to Basics: Suitcase Tour!
I have this strong belief that crafters and cupcakes go hand in hand, so I had no problem waiting in line to see a favorite artist of mine. The line was blocks long with many folks showing up hours before the doors even opened! 323 proudly displayed the limited-edition goods produced just for the show as well as a meet-and-great with the cupcake guru himself.
Fellow crafter/event photographer, and my good buddy, Beth Nixon and I had a chance to get our new posters (and take-out boxes!) signed by Johnny and ask him for some business tips (if you’re working with friends, make sure to keep a careful eye on the task at hand) as well as which bands he’s listening to these days (Beach House, Radiohead and The Deftones, just to name a few!). Of course there was cupcake consumption before the night was over.
I’m so glad such a fun, respected artist made it a point to stop in metro Detroit. Detroit and Michigan have been getting a lot of press lately, both positive and not-so-positive, so it was nice to forget about it all and talk about inspiration.
Make sure to watch the Cupcake Cannon video. With all the colorful frosting flying around, I couldn’t help but be inspired to add more color to my current craft projects!
