Casting molds are a pretty handy thing to have around, especially if you’re in the habit of playing with resin or liquid polymer clays. If you’ve ever longed for a custom mold of your own, this easy-to-follow molding putty recipe is a great place to start! It uses readily-available ingredients from the hardware store and the kitchen, so you’ll be ready to mix up a batch in no time.
Casting molds aren’t just the domain of jewelry makers or decorative crafters — they can also be used to make custom knobs and pulls and unique art pieces. You’ll also find plenty of opportunities for creative casting in model-making, tabletop gaming, and more!
Ready to give it a try? Check out this helpful video tutorial from Mark Montano, where he’ll walk you through the process of mixing a batch of molding putty, then making your own reusable casting molds.
The best part: The ingredients are easy to track down, so you can keep them on on hand in your workshop, ensuring that you’ll be able to mix just the right amount of putty for your next project without having to plan ahead!

Hi, very useful! Will try it soon. Only thing, please remember that polymer clay is the correct term. Fimo is a brand name and it is one of many brands of polymer clay. Within the community, we refer to oven baked polymer clays as polymer clays and no longer use “Fimo” as a generic terms for this family of clays. Many years ago, we did use Fimo as the generic term but not anymore.
Thanks, Donna
Loved it! Thank you!
