Creating a Sonic History of Women Around the World

I am an artist by the name of Ms. Soli Tii, and I started up the World Women Project around late summer/early autumn of 2015. My World Women Project involves sound art: music and poetry, spoken word and singing. I created tracks combining music with the voices of women in their native language. My music compositions are a mix of chillout, ambient, dark ambient, world, and experimental.

It took me five months to record, produce, mix, interview, film, edit, and present the results. During that time, I recorded over 30 tracks with voices of women speaking or singing in their native language and published them on the website. I had also posted them on SoundCloud for a certain time, but have now made the tracks available as a free download through ONErpm.

The project finished officially in January of this year, but I will be doing a one-off special track to release on 1st June 2016 with a woman speaking a language that I have not heard spoken before, so I am really looking forward to working on that.

I came up with the idea to start this project due to finding out about an interdisciplinary project (Circe: The Black Cut) who were looking for artists to to remix of voices of women from another project called Women of the Great River in Southern Africa (Radio Continental Drift). So I responded to their call and contributed to that project.

At the same time I contacted some of my friends and acquaintances from different countries and told them about my project idea and if they wanted to take part. I was lucky to have amazing friends who supported me with my ideas, as they all said yes immediately.

What I learnt from doing this project is that with commitment, determination and deep passion anything is possible. I never imagined that I would ever do something like compose and produce music or even start up a project. I also realize how lucky I am to have received the love and support from friends and acquaintances on the project, as well as people who were not involved in my project, but fully supported what I did.

There isn’t anything I would change if I did it again. What would have been a dream is to have some of the women perform the tracks live at an event. I am picturing it now and I know it would be magical. This might happen one day, who knows.
