Outdoor Art Installation With Wooden Chairs

Artist Tom Shields’ idiosyncratic work called “forrest for the chairs” questions our relationship with ordinary objects, like wooden chairs, by putting them back into the environment from which the materials that they are made from originally came.

Installed as part of an exhibition at the North Carolina Museum of Art last year, maybe the most striking thing about this work is how out of place these objects, that are such a fundamental part of our daily lives, appear when they are put back into a natural environment.
