At some point in your life you’ve probably been in a gym or other location that had mirrors facing each other, and wondered about the reflection that seemed to repeat into itself infinitely. This technique can be replicated by using two two-way mirrors with lights inside, making it appear as if you’re looking in on this sort of infinite loop.
The device shown here has a somewhat different spin to it. Engineer Steve Sutton, who has been building these devices for quite some time, and Artist Kat Moenk collaborated on this project, making a cube that is able to reflect not just in one direction, but over three dimensions. The results, as seen in the video at the end, are quite mesmerizing.
In addition to the wonder of a light show inside of a cube, another use for this would be to create a scene that would naturally stretch on for as long as the eye can see. A river, as seen above, or many other linear features, would make excellent candidates for “infinite looping.” Eventually Sutton and Moenk hope to use a crowd funding effort to make many more of these items; you can get all their contact info and subscribe to updates here.
