MAKE Flickr photo pool member s_h_i_r_o_u_t_o picked up the new Sanyo Enelopp rechargeable batteries, they’re not sold in the USA (yet, I think) – but they seem to be the best eco-friendly rechargeable batteries, can be recharged 1,000 times and do not have a major “memory effect” – Link. Oh, s_h_i_r_o_u_t_o also made a homemade case for them.

I hope I’m not alone.. what exactly does “fully recyclable when disposed as part of an approved collection scheme” mean? I understand it’s way better than using alkalines, but hey, I already have rechargables.
The only advantage that’s explained fully is that they don’t lose energy as fast as other batteries- the figure quoted was 15% of capacity lost per year.
Lower self-discharge is a pretty significant benefit. If you’re happy with your current batteries, I wouldn’t trade them in for these. But if the self-discharge rate is as low as they claim, then there is definitely a market for these batteries.
15% per year sounds a great deal better than standard NiMH. I think they lose about that much in a couple weeks.
I could see this being very nice for applications where power draw is low and you don’t want to change batteries all the time, like smoke detectors, wireless keyboard, mouse, remote controls, etc. But I wonder what the mAh capacity of these are, in case you wanted to use them in high power devices. Didn’t see it anywhere on the product page.
The mAh capacity of these AA’s looked to be 2700 from the picture. Pretty high.

Fully-Recyclable means that everything about eneloop is recyclable. The package can be recycled with other plastics, and battery can be recycled by taking it to near-by participating store–here in California, there are many grocery stores who participate in the recycling program.
Did you know that 149 tons of batteries are disposed every year? Most of us don’t know that batteries are one of the worst things for the environment. So, if you don’t think this is a big deal, then eneloop is just another rechargeable battery. But if you think about replacing all the disposable-alkline battery with eneloop, it is a big deal.
Oh, one more thing, regular rechargeable battery simply die in my digital camera if I don’t use it for a few weeks, but eneloop would keep the charge, so I can use my camera without recharging the battery right before using it.
