After having featured many of Elizabeth Hartman’s Oh, Fransson! projects here on Craft, I’ve been eagerly awaiting her new book, Modern Patchwork. In it, she shares 12 quilts to “take you beyond the basics,” and each has a beautiful modern design that still resonates with classic quilting. Each of the 12 quilt projects includes tips on selecting fabrics, detailed diagrams for piecing, and alternative color schemes. A large collection of templates is also included at the back of the book. I like that the Modern Patchwork dives right in to projects, and saves the basic tips, tricks and resources for the latter half book.

One of my favorite quilts in the book is Owl Eyes. Says Hartman:

Applique doesn’t have to be cute. It can be a great way to use shapes that might be problematic to piece, like these stacked ovals. These shapes remind me of cartoon animal eyes, but they take on a more sophisticated look when organized in to blocks.

Hartman is sharing this machine applique technique with CRAFT readers. You can download the PDF tutorial below, and check out Elizabeth’s new book, Modern Patchwork, to get the full quilt how-to.
