This gorgeous bird feeder was created by Rebecca Nickols using a recycled glass water bottle, some decorative copper wire, and a product made by Gadjit. It is a simple concept, a plastic feeder base that screws onto a standard two liter bottle neck. It will fit plastic soda or glass water bottles, but not wine bottles.
As soon as I saw this, I wondered if anyone had created their own 3D printed version. Sure enough, after a quick search on Thingiverse, I found Gavin Kennedy’s awesome 3D model. He has created several revisions of his design which is fantastic to see. A project like this shows the value of personal 3D printers– being able to model your idea in CAD, print one, test it, and change it until it works they way you want. An added bonus of using Thingiverse to share designs, is the ability to connect with makers across the planet– Gavin’s profile shows that he lives in South Africa.
I can’t wait to print one of these out, and maybe a few extra for friends. I wish I had stumbled upon this before Christmas, though on the bright side, it looks like I will be ahead of the game for next year.
