3D Printing at World Maker Faire: Robots, Fashion and More!

3D Printing & Imaging Craft & Design Robotics

Here is a rundown of some amazing 3D printed items from World Maker Faire in New York.  This year we saw an diverse array of 3D prints – from complex humanoid robots to wearable designs.

3D Printed Robots

Adventure Ball


The Adventure Ball by Michael Curry, also known on Thingiverse as “Skimbal”, is a 3D printed robotic pet that transforms from a ball to a four legged robot.

InMoov Humanoid Robot


InMoov is an Open Source 3D printable animatronic robot. It was designed by Gael Langevin, but this particular build by Chuck Fletcher integrated eye tracking, Kinect and Leap Motion control. The video shows the InMoov using eyetracking to follow the movements of a piece of paper.

BoB the Biped


This cute walking robot was developed by Kevin Biagini of Let’s Make Robots. Check out his Instructable on how to make your own.

Jimmy the Robot

Jimmy the Robot made his debut at the Make: Hardware Innovation Workshop during a talk by Intel’s Futurist Brian David Johnson. In his current form he is the 3D printed exoskeleton that will contain a 21st Century robot that is easy to build, completely open source, and filled with humanity. Designed by Wayne Losey of Modibot, Jimmy has been printed both on a MakerBot Replicator 2 and in laser sintered nylon via Shapeways.

Coney Island Scan-A-Rama was a huge hit at World Maker Faire, creating a Microsoft Kinect to create full body 3D scanned portraits onsite for Faire attendees.

Anna Kaziunas France is interested practical digital fabrication focused project documentation (anything that turns codes into things), as well as adventures in synthetic biology, biohacking, personal genomics and programmable materials.

She's currently working on the forthcoming book "Design for CNC: Practical Joinery Techniques, Projects, and Tips for CNC-routed Furniture".

She’s also the Academic Dean of the global Fab Academy program, the co-author of Getting Started with MakerBot and compiled the Make: 3D Printing book.
