Countdown to Maker Faire KC at Hammerspace

It was Thursday night, only 36 hours to the start of Maker Faire Kansas City, and Kansas City’s one year-old makerspace, Hammerspace was hopping! Teams were finishing up projects, tuning up 3D printers, painting impressive Mayan landscapes for robot competition environs, and testing Power Wheel Racers. Super Awesome Sylvia was there, as were the MakerBot crew (who brought in some FAB BBQ from Oklahoma Joe’s), and our own Maker Shed team.

Focused and social was the mood in the electronics room. Hammerspace will be represented by over 30 exhibits at Maker Faire Kansas City — that’s about 12% of the entire show content!
Jordie Smith got his WaspWings backpack project going for the first time while we were there. His girlfriend is going to wear these at Maker Faire KC; note that Jordie was smart enough to build in a switch that commands the wings to collapse.

Hammerspace founder and owner Dave Dalton shows off their rad recycling project: members’ empties melted in a flowerpot foundry, ready now as raw material. Dave is into “lost-plastic” casting, turning 3D printed objects into bronze, brass, and now aluminum objects.

Beck Dalton is the First Lady of Hammerspace, a mom of four who has righteously created a kid maker space where kids hack, Lego, play. She’s also been setting up ladies’ nights at Hammerspace, a time for moms to get out of the house and come down and make.
Super Awesome Sylvia brought her fabulously decorated MakerBot all the way out to Kansas City for Maker Faire KC.
Craig from built-to-spec.com was showing off the Learn to Solder kit he created for Maker Faire KC. When a set of them are lined up, the LEDs can act as light sensors, turning each other on and off and creating a daisy chain effect.
These guys were working on a mount for their Kinect/3D scanning 3D printer exhibit.
Hammerspace has pretty cool ambiance for a space that’s only been open for a year. Take this drinking fountain Dave hacked into a Brawndo Thirst Mutilator machine. Flip a swtich and it mixes a gatorade-ish powder into the water.
Goodnight from Hammerspace! See you all very very soon at Maker Faire Kansas City, this weekend at Union Station in downtown Kansas City, MO.
