In this Tested: One Day Build video, with Adam Savage and Will Smith, Adam decides to upgrade one of his Leatherman Wave cases with a belt-borne, one-finger-access clip holster. He decides to use a scrap piece of aluminum for the build. He also plans to upgrade his previous design of riveted leather straps for the belt holder with a holder cut directly from the aluminum itself.
Over the course of this 30 minute video, we learn a lot about basic metalworking techniques, some of the machines in Adam’s shop, specifics on things like using digital calipers, the Kant Twist t-clamps, and layout fluid for scribing your design. We also learn about the importance of strategizing your build steps when working on a project. And measuring a bazillion times before cutting.
The ending of this video came as something of a shock to me. Watch it to see what I mean. As I was looking at this project, flirting with the idea of trying it myself, I couldn’t help but thinking: “But mine would never come out right.” Watch the video and see what happens in Adam’s case.
You’ll also want to stick around for the bonus footage at very end where Adam plows his way through a 2 x 4 with the 2.5″ saw blade on the Wave. You won’t believe the short work he makes of that board. I was blown away and I own a Wave and already know how serious that saw blade can be. Try to guess how long it will take him and see how close you get.
