World Maker Faire New York is coming quickly and it’s sure to be a cascade of amazing projects and experiences. Sometimes they all come so fast and with such volume that it’s hard to remember them all. What specific memories do you have of past Maker Faires that you’re particularly fond of?
I’ve been to several Maker Faires in the past, but it was only at the last Maker Faire Bay Area that I was able to catch the Power Racing Series. What I pictured would be a DIY go-kart race was more of a celebration of DIY motoring, with crashes, calamities, and camaraderie abounding. The event became less about the race and more about the fun and spectacle of it. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing it again in New York this year.

At the Detroit Maker Faire last year, my older son got to participate in the Lego Brick Challenge game show. He had a blast.
My younger son sat in on the lock picking activity and picked it up real quick. I had to explain to my wife why he was suddenly interested in every lock in the house and why I was making lock picking tools out of used hacksaw blades.
Last year we had a taxidermist do a demo at our MMF. One little girl stood and watched as she skinned and mounted a squirrel. When she was done the little girl approached and asked if she could have the skull. After a quick OK from mom and dad and some instructions for removing the remaining flesh the little girl left, proudly clutching a freshly severed squirrel head in a bag.
That kind of thing is why I love Maker Faire.
