The 2013 Maker Faire season is almost over, but not without a fair from our friends in Twente in the Netherlands. The fair is set for this weekend, Nov. 23-24.
The fair is expected to attract more than 70 makers, including presentations from Theo Jansen, Dave Borghuis on hackerspaces, and Vanessa Evers on the impact of robot technology on daily life.
One of the highlights of the fair will be an appearance by Jansen. Since 1991 Jansen has been working on his strandabeest project Theo makes skeletons that are able to “walk” with the wind. His vision is to create skeletons that can survive exposure to storms and water as they scuttle about on beaches and dunes.
The Spullenmen will also be at the fair. According the their website, “the Spullenmen make visual theatre and theatrical installations. They share a fascination for old ‘spullen’, Dutch for ‘things’ or ‘stuff’. With lost-and-found scraps they developed their own specific visual language, which they put to use in standalone contraptions, hidden (street) performance, short acts and full theatre productions. The Spullenmen do not aim for one genre or discipline of arts, but instead seek for the shape that a specific idea needs.”
At the Twente Mini Make Faire they will present interactive installations from their “button-museum” and an interactive 3D printing project.
Also look for SIIC, a group of young artists who created the “soundwave”, a sculpture that presents a sound wave in a visual form.
Other events on tap include learn-to-solder workshops, welding, robot making, 3D printing, lasercutting, wearables, and even making wood sculpture with chainsaws.
