Today, June 23, is National Women In Engineering Day as announced by the Women’s Engineering Society. This announcement coincides with the 95th anniversary of the founding of the Women’s Engineering Society.
The aim is to celebrate the work that women do in engineering, and to showcase the great engineering careers that are available for girls.
There is no debate that women are under represented In STEM. There are many, many, reasons this is happening from social stigma to workplace bias. If you would like to jump into the details of why there are so few women in Science Technology, Engineering and Math, you may find this extensive research released by the AAUW in 2010 quite insightful.
Despite the fact that there are fewer women in STEM, we find that there are a wide variety of stories to provide inspiration. These women have changed our world for the better, and that should be acknowledged and celebrated.

Meet 43 groundbreaking Women in STEM! Their discoveries have saved millions of lives, pioneered modern technology, and pushed the boundaries of the universe in pursuit of knowledge. But before they were Nobel Prize winners and game-changers, these accomplished women were young girls just like you—curious, questioning and exploring the world.
Fortunately for us, they kept their childhood curiosity and imagination alive through their years of research and achievement. These adventurous women that questioned the status quo have sparked some of the greatest discoveries of our time.
Maybe you would prefer something to listen to while you go about your day. How about a collection of radio shows discussing Women in STEM? Sit back, listen and become inspired!
Listen to stories about fascinating women working and learning in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields; and learn about programs and practices throughout the U.S. designed to broaden the participation of women in STEM.
Google has launched their initiative, Made With Code, which connects Mentors and Makers to inspire young women to “Code” the world that they want to see. The site offers beautiful videos to give inspiration as well as toolsets to help educate and inspire creativity.
What can Make do to help?
We can supply some exposure. For every intelligent and determined engineer or maker woman we feature, we have an opportunity to inspire another woman to pursue STEM and making.
We’ve given a few shout outs in the past, so this week we’d like to bring you profiles on women who are roboticists, artists, designers, programmers, and makers of all kinds over the next few days, and we’ll be making an effort to make sure that the women in the maker movement get their fair share of the spotlight as we build our maker community in the future.
