New LEGO MINDSTORMS!

Lego Mindstorms News 2GoRobotics writes “LEGO is finally rehauling it’s Mindstorms kit. At the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in early January, LEGO Group announced LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT, a new system that redefines the consumer robotics category which the company created in 1998.     I’m a little disappointed there isn’t support for vision, out-of-box. Ultrasonic is nice, but after 8 years, you’d think they’d have come up with something a bit more impressive. Also, no word on how many sensors and motors can be connected to the NXT brick. From this picture it looks like it’s still just 3 motors and 4 sensors. That’s disappointing.

    Some good things: (1) The software is based on LabVIEW, which means it’s mature, and (2) “Digital wire interface allows for third-party developments”, which means they’re open for and welcoming to hackers.

    Whoa! That is going to be killer! As an owner of a Mindstorms 1.0 set, I’m amazed that they actually listened to all our whining and complaining about how to get around the different limitations in the sets.

    Does anyone else but me notice the LARGE difference in price between US and Canadian dollars? I mean, whoa. The exchange rate right now is $0.86 CDN to $1 US.

    $249.99 US converts roughly to $290 Canadian, a far cry from $379.99…
