I'm a word nerd who loves to geek out on how emerging technology affects the lexicon. I was an editor on the first 40 volumes of MAKE, and I love shining light on the incredible makers in our community. In particular, covering art is my passion — after all, art is the first thing most of us ever made. When not fawning over perfect word choices, I can be found on the nearest mountain, looking for untouched powder fields and ideal alpine lakes.

Photographer Tod Seelie has great shots and tales of recent travels to Indonesia on his blog. The set that really caught my eye is of the tall bike crew in Yogya. They remind me of an Indonesian Cyclecide, and they certainly have no shortage of modded rides.
Seelie also posted a video of riding tall bikes in Jakarta. Love the perspective as vehicles cruise by. Being tall is clearly a safety plus for visibility.

Very cool video! Disappointed, though, that the video showed the bicyclists plowing straight through a red light.

Heh – you’ve obviously never been to Indonesia… Road rules are generally treated as broad guidelines… generally not enforced unless there is a police post at the traffic lights or a traffic cop standing in the middle of the road. It’s like of a beautiful chaos where the individual motorist doesn’t want to get killed (or presumably kill others), just wants to get from A to B, without having to stop at a red light that no-one is crossing at.

I’ll corroborate askvictor’s story on that one, it’s a bit of a free-for-all. Always wear your helmet!
