If you have a desk job and you want to be more active, standing while you work could be a good solution. Check out these seven DIY standing desk ideas for inspiration if you’re like to build one yourself!

Standing Desk with Pipe Fittings

Pipe and pipe fittings are staples of homemade items, and this standing desk is nicely made with ¾” black iron pipe. The results are quite nice, and shouldn’t be too difficult to duplicate. For more pipe ideas, check out these DIY pipe shelving builds.

Electrically Adjustable Desk

If you’re not ready to make the commitment to standing all the time while working, this electrically adjustable desk could be the solution. Two linear actuators raise and lower it, allowing you to sit or stand depending on your mood.

Standing Desk for Engineers

If you’re an engineer, or a hobbyist in need of lots of workspace and many monitors, this desk could be for you. After being unimpressed with what the internet had to offer, instructables user “kalfalfa” decided to build his own. Requirements included “room for five monitors,” and “lots of work space,” both of which he seems to have accomplished nicely!

Tree Standing Desk

For an entirely different take on the standing desk, here’s one that literally strapped to a tree. Though it might be refreshing to work on computer tasks outdoors, the lack of extra space would be a drawback for many people.

Cardboard Standing Desk

Though this desk conversion using cardboard boxes isn’t the most elegant design here, it could be an easy and inexpensive chance to see if a standing desk is right for you. Author Dan Cooper’s article focuses more on his experience standing while working than the build, but one would imagine this would be very simple to recreate.

Hamster Wheel Standing Desk

If you’re going to stand while you work all day, you could, in theory, walk as well. This human hamster wheel setup allows you to do just that, though given it’s construction, stopping if you go too fast could be a problem!

Screw Jack Desk

Another simple solution, this desk setup involves a desk raised with screw jacks. I would be leery about the stability of this setup, but author “noahw” claims that this setup doesn’t move at all when braced to a nearby wall.
