Beautiful Weeds: Preserve a Dandelion in Resin

1_1024x1024

After a successful Kickstarter campaign, the Dandelion Collective has been producing these gorgeous paper weights made from dried out dandelions and clear resin. Each weed is carefully hand selected, dried, and preserved into a perfectly polished sphere of cast polyester resin, with a small flat base so it doesn’t roll away. These are available for purchase, however The Dandelion Collective has been nice enough to share the process and produce this little video showing you how you can create your own DIY version.

This is a great project to try if you want to get into casting with resin, and makes a fantastic one of a kind gift. You will have to plan ahead since the dandelions need to be picked and dried out for about two weeks. Spring couldn’t come any sooner, right?

Check out Dandelion Paper Weights website to find out more about this awesome product.

    Impressive.
This is not an easy task . . .
I was expecting to see some tricks revealed like not using hydroscopic mixing tools like wooden stir sticks, paper cups, anything that would introduce moisture. Keeping the resin warm, put the mold in a container that can be evacuated with a vacuum pump to release air bubbles . . .

Hey Jim you seem knowledgeable in this, would you know of a better resource for noobs looking to get into resin casting?

I am a noob too. I am experimenting with the process but Google vacuum (or pressure)(or ultrasonic) degassing resin casts:

I like the idea of building my own equipment and there a lot of tips on Youtube.

The one thing we really wanted to see is how the dandelion was opened.

I really wanted to see how the tin was opened, but they seemed to skip through that bit.

Hello Web Admin, I noticed that your On-Page SEO is is missing a few factors, for one you do not use all three H tags in your post, also I notice that you are not using bold or italics properly in your SEO optimization. On-Page SEO means more now than ever since the new Google update: Panda. No longer are backlinks and simply pinging or sending out a RSS feed the key to getting Google PageRank or Alexa Rankings, You now NEED On-Page SEO. So what is good On-Page SEO?First your keyword must appear in the title. Then it must appear in the URL.You have to optimize your keyword and make sure that it has a nice keyword density of 3-5% in your article with relevant LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing). Then you should spread all H1,H2,H3 tags in your article.Your Keyword should appear in your first paragraph and in the last sentence of the page. You should have relevant usage of Bold and italics of your keyword. There should be one internal link to a page on your blog and you should have one image with an alt tag that has your keyword….wait there’s even more Now what if i told you there was a simple WordPress plugin that does all the On-Page SEO, and automatically for you? That’s right AUTOMATICALLY, just watch this 4minute video for more information at. Seo Plugin

Did anyone else cringe watching the opening of the resin can?

    1. jim klessig says:

      OMG yes
I had visions of blood everywhere.

  11. etruss says:

We have had one of these for many years. On the bottom is a label that says “TARAX INFINITY PRODUCTS LTD HANDCRAFTED IN CANADA”

  12. Kellie M says:

Hardest part of the project – opening the can.

I didn’t see anywhere on the video where they said they dried the dandelion. Instead it showed that they put the freshly ‘puffed’ dandelion into the resin.

    1. jim klessig says:

ummmmm….. The part where they said to let it dry, and showed a timelapse of it puffing over 1-2 days. I am amazed that it sayed together as they put it in the resin.

You’re so kind to share this resin diy tutorial. It’s so beautiful.
