Gever Tulley to speak tonight at Parsons in NYC

Gever Tulley, co-author of 50 Dangerous Things (You Should Let Your Children Do) and founder of the Tinkering School will be giving a talk tonight at Parsons the New School for Design in NYC, so if you missed him at Maker Faire, here’s your chance!

A self-taught computer scientist who holds multiple technology patents, Gever’s expertise is really in thinking. With a history of tackling large, complex problems, he is (almost pathologically) drawn to projects that require him to learn or invent something new. His career has been shaped by what he calls “failure-positive” exploration: the notion that trying to do something, even if it fails, is better than doing nothing at all.

For the last several years Gever Tulley has devoted countless hours to showing kids and their parents what it means to take real risks — not just physical risks but *cognitive* risks. The two main fruits of his efforts, the Tinkering School and 50 Dangerous Things, have attracted widespread praise. But one of the best ways to convince people is to practice what you preach — and, as you’ll see, Tulley has. In this talk for AMT, he’ll cover some of the ideas that have spun out as he’s created these projects: crackling new ones, cranky old ones, and a few about which ones to keep, which to lose, and which to file, plant, or ferment.
