Nice write up of last week’s Ignite NYC… “Night Life Reprogrammed – NYTimes.com”

THE rowd pressed forward on Tuesday night to watch the soldering contest as it entered its final stages. A dozen men, gripping hot irons, sweated over circuit boards at M1-5, a TriBeCa bar. Their goal: win a race to assemble a primitive remote control. The prize: a lump of clear resin embedded with flashing blue L.E.D.s.

Four camera people from three Web video sites circled them. The crowd, a hundred strong, sipped glasses of dark beer and wine. Who would be the first contestant to jump up, point the remote at a television resting on a side table, and turn it off?

The tension!

The contest was the first order of business at IgniteNYC, a techie event series that started in Seattle in 2006. Later that night, there were super-speedy PowerPoint presentations, and, from the laptop and smartphone-bearing legions aligned on a banquette, a barrage of live blogging

Is that Bre Pettis in the second photo?

I miss his weekend project videos..

  2. Not Happy says:

Have you noticed? Pictures are no longer worth 1000 words.
If your photos are bad don’t post them.
There is no information in bad photos.

@Not Happy – are you saying these photos are “bad”?

What’s up with the comments lately? I don’t really read them that often, but everytime I check them out to see if someone said something useful or related, there’s some idiot complaining about something, about how dangerous the project was, about linking to other sites, about the photos, about…

I think the photos look good, it looks like it was a fun night with a lot going on, soldering and blogging; and I also miss Bre Pettis and his weekend projects (no offense to KipKay, I just haven’t been inspired by any of his projects :P).

@Dako – did you see the last one? modding a radio to listen to aircraft control… all the videos from kip are from MAKE, what projects did you build that bre made?

@PT Maybe take a break from the forums. SRSLY. No more harshing the Make mellow.

Well then, Bre is alive I see. His videos were so entertaining. I always watched those – not sure why I liked them the best. (I’ve made more Bre projects than anyone else, too. I’m not going to go buy a kit – I’m going to MAKE it myself.)

    Let the B³ Movement begin!

    Bring Bre Back!!!

In fact, put Bre and Ladyada together! That would be freakin’ awesome!

I kind of like the crafty ones (though there’s already Craftzine), I liked the screenprinting one, and I just watched again the messenger bag one ’cause I’m planning on making one for school. The LED cube was really cool, and me and friend were trying to make a bigger one to use it as a game output “screen”. Other projects that I thought were cool: dice rubik cube, joule thief, t-shirt cannon, and circuit bending (and probably other i don’t remember).

I just watched the last one by KipKay, and it looks fun and simple enough, and I live near an airport :D
