20 Infinity Mirror Projects to Reflect On… Forever

Art & Sculpture Craft & Design Furniture & Lighting Home

Infinity mirrors are a set of mirrors configured in such a way that light sources inside of them appear to multiply to “infinity.” Since one-way mirrors are used on at least one surface, you can look into this strange light field, observing what you might have seen by accident in a gym or other situation where two mirrors are facing each other. Here are 20 models that people have built to create this type of illusion!

These simple builds are a good place to start

Modified Frames

Though you can make one from scratch, if you’re able to modify an existing frame, it should save you a step or two.

Multi-Dimensional

Why restrict your bouncing light enjoyment to one dimension?

  • Pocket Universes, one of which is pictured above attempt to take this concept to the next level with extra scenery inside this reflective cube.
  • This box uses three separate mirrors, and different colored lights to create a 3D effect. [via Twitter]
  • Not everything has to be at 90° angles. As seen in the video below around 4:00, pyramids can also give an excellent effect!

Names

Light bouncing around is neat, but if you need your name or other word in lights, an infinity mirror really helps the letters stand out!

  • Although it appears to be promotional in nature, the “SAP” infinity mirror seen above is really an excellent build. There are some really neat effects around the 1:15 mark.
  • As long as SAP gets a mirror, why not one for the twins? This mirror appears to use a reflective material on the letters instead of more lights to spell the word “twins” out.
  • Using a similar design to the twins mirror, this Brie mirror appears to be very well put together, and uses a remote control for switching.

Interesting Insides

Why not get creative with what’s inside of these wonderful devices?

  • If there are lights around the outside, as shown in the video above, why not put a NeoPixel ring in the center?
  • This mirror creates a heart inside by attaching string in that shape.
  • Lights placed semi-randomly can create an interesting effect, as seen here.

Tables

One of the obvious uses for this effect is in coffee tables.

Other Mirrors

From scary to a ceiling mount, the possibilities for this art form are endless!

  • The build seen above is probably the scariest mirror on this list.
  • Why not put one on the ceiling? Just make sure it’s attached well!
  • Finally, I built my mirror frame (pictured below) out of furring strips I had let over from other projects. It turned out pretty well, though perhaps some of the techniques seen here could have saved me time!
