Red Feathers Earflap Hat

Christine Davis (a.k.a. Lady Winter) brings fun and a little bit of magic back into cold January days. Her purse definitely looks like it’s hanging in Madam Yeti’s closet, and her wispy Red Feather earflap hat brings to mind an artifact from the farthest reaches of Lapland in some sort of alternate universe. She clearly revels in the unusual materials she plays around with, and we get to delight at the dream world she hints at. Make sure to check out her Etsy shop, where you can find a whole line of great hats, drawings and even the occasional purse.
Arwen: How did you first get involved with crafting?
Christine:
I have been crafting all my life: silk-screening posters and t-shirts for my band, and making handmade gifts for my family and friends with the motivation that the most love comes out of creativity and effort. The items I sell are things I would make anyway; I just happened to lose my job, so the need arose to make more of a business out of my already accumulating fashion line.
Arwen: How did you learn to sew, and what gives you ideas?
Christine:
I learned to sew by doing, by borrowing multiple sewing machines and breaking lots of needles. The ability to make something that doesn’t already exist is just too good to pass up. It is like creating your own dream world — having more control over it. For example, I can wake up in the morning and contemplate the bizarre adventure I had while sleeping and sit at the sewing machine and translate the emotions from the dream world into hats and bags.
Arwen: How do you come up with your designs? (And do you believe in Yetis?)
Christine:
I am currently obsessed with outfitting people in outlandish, beautiful and fun warmth. This is where the inspiration for fur designs comes from. However, I do look to my friends for inspiration as well. They constantly amaze me — making lace ties for t-shirts and cutting their clothes up until they are more of a personality than a shirt. And I do believe in Yetis, why not?
