Here’s another “MAKER-friendly store, this one in Toronto. Andrew writes – “Not much on the site, but it’s the brick and mortar that make Active Surplus amazing. Right nearly in the middle of downtown Toronto, this place is a haven for MAKE’ers. All manner of electronics, cables, motors, odd MAKE’able knick knacks — this place is a GOLD MINE. Check it out if you’re in Toronto!” – Link.

I grew up with Active Surplus, it’s a fantastic store. There’s always a lot of interesting stuff there.
There’s some pics on flickr.

mostly of the gorilla though… I liked it better when it was less organized down on the main floor.
I haven’t bought anything from them (yet), but there’s also Toronto Surplus & Scientific.
I haven’t been there in years. I used to go there all the time and dig through the junk. I moved away from Toronto in ’93 and haven’t been there since.
Not too many other places around where you can put a bendy seahorse and an electroshock machine in the same shopping cart. True, it was better when they had the basement, but still, it’s a blessing that it’s there at all.
I haven’t been there for a few years, they did still have the basement and didn’t have that tall facade.
Towards the end of my going there it seemed to be getting very popular, but going downhill because of it. It was getting expensive and the items weren’t as interesting.
Does anyone remember the surplus store about half a block from Active down Beverly? They were much more junky but had a lot of cool stuff. They close about 10 years ago :(
I’ll be in TO in couple of months, I’m planning to visit Active while I’m there. Is Supremetronic still there?
SupremeTronic is still there.
