African Hackerspaces Trip Still Needs Funding

A couple of weeks ago, we told you about Mitch Altman and Bilal Ghalib’s desire to raise money to host a three-day maker/hackerspace at the upcoming Maker Faire Africa (Cairo, Oct 6-8). They still need support:

Hackerspaces are supportive communities around the world where people explore and do what they love. Though currently sparse in Africa, hackerspaces have been instrumental in the Arab Spring, and they will continue to be helpful in providing opportunities for more people to live more fulfilling lives. But more are needed.

Mitch Altman (recipient of the first Maker Hero Award, and co-founder of Noisebridge hackerspace), and Bilal Ghalib (co-founder of All Hands Active hackerspace, and hackerspace documentarian) are two Americans going to Maker Faire Africa next month to help organizers there create their own unique hackerspaces, starting with a 3-day hackerspace at the Faire for any and all to participate in. Along with their collective experience, they will be bringing many donated items for the organizers of the Cairo Hackerspace to establish their full-time hackerspace.

Bilal and Mitch received seed funding from Maker Faire Africa, and started a Kickstarter campaign to raise the rest. With four days remaining, a few more backers can help them reach their goal of $7,022. A little goes a long way — any amount will help (and you can get some really cool premiums)!
