An open source… restaurant?

An open source… restaurant?

To be honest, I’m not really sure what is going on here, but it looks fun. Arne Hendriks and Bas van Abel have collaborated to create the Instructables Restaurant, an eatery where everything inside it- including food, furniture and entertainment- have been constructed from designs available for free on Instructables. They are still in the trial phase of the project, so they don’t have a permanent location, but their inaugural event appears to have gone quite well.

Of course, if you would like to make your own, there is an Instructable for that.

Hey, I have a few recipes on Instructables. I wonder if any of mine got chosen.

    1. Arne Hendriks says:

      Hi Darren,

Maybe not this time but this is also the point of this place, to be able to upload our best recipes, or best other designs for that matter, and have them feature in a real situation, and to get feedback from the guests on the recipes and designs so we can improve them. Check out the instructable and get in touch. I will check your recipes.

      Arne

I really don’t feel that instructables really embodies open source in any way… Poor choice of words, lousy site to affiliate yourself with.

Lately ‘ibles has been doing really sleazy things like locking people out of “premium content” and putting the vast majority of user contributed content behind a paywall. It’s one thing to offer your own content and charge money for it, but when your site consists of nothing but user created (mostly CC or GPL) content, charging people money to see it against the wishes of the author is just sleazy.

      I agree!
Open Source is not exactly what Instructables is…
And the website thrives on the generousity to share by others…
