I’m not using Audible so much any more, but I still want to get some audio books once in a while. I think I’m going to try some of the audio book rental services that send out titles Netflix style. The two I found are Simply Audio Books & JitterBug. Has anyone tried these? What did you think? $20 for all you can rent in a month.

If you’re not going to rent on a regular monthly basis, I have another suggestion – Ashgrove Audiobook Exchange. I’ve been a member for almost ten years. Buy them at a greatly reduced price, keep them as long as you wish, then return them for credit towards more audiobooks. Great mom and pop owned company.
I am also thinking about joining a audiobook club. I would caution against SimplyAudioBooks.com because it appears that they split books into seperate shipments.

JitterBug.com looks reasonable. I was unable to find any documentation on the number of books that can be checked out in one month. (thinking about ordering a book, burning it, and returning it the next day.)
audible.com is another option but it looks like they have a monthly limit.
I am a member of simplyaudiobooks.com. There is a limit of 2 at a time for the $19.95 p/month plan. I think for the same price, jitterbug only allows 1 at a time.

http://www.kitabe.com/index.cfm?pageid=1 is another one that delivers them in mp3 cd format. I haven’t personally tried them, but figured it was worth listing.

Check your local library. I’m sure you’ve heard it before, but my library (Anne Arundel County (MD)) has an agreement with one of the big companies (I’m thinking “Recorded Audio”) that lets you download all you want with M$ DRM wrappers.
Simply Audiobooks is currently the best. They have two shipping centers and their selection and website is awesome.
Another awesome audio book club is Books Free. They great for books as well as audio books.
Jiggerbug is up and coming but need to work on selection.
Two useful sites are http://www.rentbooksoncd.com or http://www.rentbooksontape.com
I’m a member of Jiggerbug Audio Book Club and I love them!! They deliver the audio books to my door AND let me download for under $25/month and I have no problems with their selections — they have over 25000 titles and the one time they didn’t have something I wanted they ordered it and got it to me that same week.
I used to be a member of smply audio books but they were really slow getting my books to me and I didn’t care much for their customer service. I heard that they just recently started downloads but you have to pay extra??? What’s the point of paying for an unlimited rental service if you have to pay extra for downloads?? My advice – try jiGGerbug!

Hey guys, I’m a member of Jiggerbug Rental Service and I love it. I like it better that audible because you rent instead of buy and unlike simplyaudio you can get books my mail AND downloads in one low rate plan. I think with simply if you want both you have to get 2 separate plans.
I also found Jiggle: Audio book search tool to find all the audio books I can’t seem to find.
I run a website that reviews all of the online Audio Book Rentals on CD companies. Feed back and suggestions are encouraged. All book readers are welcome to post reviews of their favorite audio books.

You can also find quite a lot of free stuff out there. http://www.audiobooks.net and http://librivox.com are all places one can find free audio books.
I’have found my first in a site specialized in audiobooks in italian.
Cool !!

I have found to my deep distress, signing up for a year subscription to ‘Simply Audio Books’ creates much strife! Their system, I’m afraid, is quite subversive. Each time I mail back a package of theirs, it takes AT LEAST 14 days before they admit they have it. On the times in which I start to bang my head against the wall and complain to them (through their channeled e-mail system)about the turn-around time, suddenly my returns are found the VERY NEXT DAY and my new selection is on the way! For your own sanity I highly recommend any other company!!
I’m sorry, but as a P.S.,’Simply Audio’ claims everything takes 3-5 days of shipping. This is both ways and only business days, with the claim of under 24 hours for the next book shipment. To me, this makes all other claims subject. Since I know the first two of their claims are grossly incorrect, in my experience.
I bought an Simply audio book gift certificate and was totally embarrassed when my friend could not get any books sent to her. In three months she only got 2 shipments (one book really). The company kept saying she needed more books on her book shelf, but it was full. They obviously don’t have enough books and don’t seem to care. I e-mailed them several times to complain. She still didn’t get any. So what if they were newer selections? Who wants old ones? Please don’t use this service.
I had an audio book rental store for 7 years and had 7,000 books. I closed down the store. I discovered the best kept secret…. digital library. I get all the latest and greatest downloaded from the local library. You can have 7 books on hold and 35 books out if you are in Neveda. Calif. lets you have 7 out and 10 on reserve. Its free..
